Things to do in Dongara
Just three and a half hours north of Perth by car lies the start of Western Australia's Coral Coast region and the twin towns of Dongara and Port Denison. This lovely area offers a relaxed lifestyle with beautiful beaches, historical sites and a healthy fishing industry.
The main street, Moreton Terrace is lined with Moreton Bay Fig trees which were planted in 1906 and are now a focal point of the town.
Here are a few places to visit:
- Explore South Beach: This wide, white sand beach stretches to the horizon or, if you don't fancy walking, cruise along beautiful South Beach in your car - no need for a 4WD.
- For a truly leisurely walk, the Irwin River Nature Trail is just perfect, you can spot swans, pelicans and other wildlife. Access from Church Street.
- Visit Russ Cottage, built in the late 1860's: a typical yeoman's cottage of the time.
- For more history, take the Heritage Trail. This 1.6km walk features 28 heritage-listed buildings including the Royal Steam Flour Mill.
- For more culture, a visit to the Old Police Station, now the Irwin District Museum, is a must-see!
- Visit the Silverdale Olive Orchard & Processing Family where you can sample olives and olive oils.
- Go to the Fisherman's lookout-obelisk in Denison to get a panoramic view of the harbour and surrounds.
- Relax at our Drive-in cinema. During the summer months, the Drive-in shows up-to-date movies on saturday evenings.
